Rock n Roll is back to Milton Keynes Bowl, with Foo Fighters visiting, with a strong support of Biffy Clyro, Jimmy Eat World and Hot Rats (2 members of Supergrass). The Hot Rats (6/10) open up proceedings with a half an hour set including David Bowie's Queen Bitch, they make a fantastic sound for just two people, and are a good opening band. Jimmy Eat World'S (8/10) American pop punk sound follow up nicely, and one of the original bands from the pop punk era, they are a good choice and warm the crowd up with songs such as The Middle and Bleed American setting up nicely for Biffy Clyro (9/10), who open up with The Captain, which is the opening song from latest album Only Revolutions, and with the whole field on their feet, bouncing up and down to Biffy's tight rock sound, with a majority of their set being from the latest album Only Revolutions and Puzzle, not really delving into older numbers, but they still leave an impression on the 65 000 capacity crowd. Highlight of the set however was Many of Horror, which is an atmospheric and epic song, and sounds even better live than it does on record. Then enter the head liners Foo Fighters (10/10) with lead singer Dave Grohl, running up an down his podium before kicking into opener Bridges Burning, also the opener from new album Wasting Lights, then straight into Rope, which was one of the earlier singles from Wasting Lights, then generally play songs from their Greatest Hits album, with songs including The Pretender, My Hero, Breakout and Learn to Fly, as set which also includes a special guest appearance from the days DJ Bob Mould for single Dear Rosemary, the highlight of the set was Best of You, with the crowd signing the tune back to Grohl and co, before they kicked into Skin and Bones.
They finish the first section of the set with crowd pleaser All My Life, with the whole venue bouncing up and down, singing the words from start to finish. Then they go off from the encore, with band - crowd banter, with Grohl appearing from backstage on the big screens, asking the fans how many songs they want, eventually deciding on 5 songs. Then Grohl comes out by himself, and plays through a mesmeric version of Wheels by himself, playing in front of the screen in the middle of the crowd, he then goes into playing Times Like These, before the rest of the band joining in half way through the song. Then enter the 2nd and 3rd special guests of the day, Seasick Steve and Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones. With ex Nirvana sticks man Grohl on drums, they jam together through a version of Seasick Steve's Back in the Doghouse. They end with Everlong, which is a fantastic end to the show, with fireworks ending the show with a bang. Overall Foo's put on an incredible show, with a fantastic sound system and certainly a show that I and I am sure they remember fondly and forever.
This is my video from You Tube of Foo Fighters playing Bridges Burning, the set opener.
